Round 1

The results followed predictions except on Board 3 where newcomer Lawrence Bretag from St Helens missed at least one clear win before drawing with Alastair Dyer.

Round 2

Again the results mainly went according to seeding. The exceptions were second seed Ramin Rezaie who lost to Launceston clubmate Michael Lucht and third seed Dyer who lost to Kevin Hendrey. Bretag drew with Tony Sturges. Tony Dowden played an interesting simplifying combination against David Hughes of Devonport.

Round 3

Dowden and Glen Gibbs emerged as the early leaders by beating the two Hendrey brothers. Dowden somewhat fortuitously beat Thomas in a double rook and pawn ending while Gibbs accounted for Kevin. Nigel Frame and Lucht saved their energy for the evening round (to no avail as it turned out) by agreeing to an early draw.

Round 4

Gibbs lost to Dowden in a Modern Defence when his aggressive intentions on the kingside were comfortably countered by Dowden’s queenside play. Ramin Rezaie bounced back into contention with a spectacular win against Frame. Dyer and Thomas Hendry both fought their way back into contention with respective wins over Launceston players Justin Hood and Lucht.

Round 5

Horton-Frame (view game) Dowden profited from an early piece blunder by Kevin Hendrey. Dyer won in the ending against Thomas Hendrey’s Sveshnikov Sicilian. Gibbs prevailed against Ramin Rezaie. Lucht and Vincent Horton moved into a share of third with Dyer with respective wins over Hughes and Frame.

Round 6

Despite losing an exchange along the way, Dowden obtained his sixth win by slowly outplaying and eventually mating Vincent Horton from the Black side of the French Defence. Vincent – still only 11 years old – should be proud of his strong play throughout the event. Alastair Dyer continued his stuttering form – surely only temporary – by obtaining a winning position against Gibb before suddenly losing a piece and the game. Glen Gibb therefore came clear second with 5/6 and at over 70 years old remains both a remarkable inspiration and a formidable opponent. Michael Lucht claimed clear third position on 4.5/6 by defeating Kevin Hendrey.
